Winter Guests

if they knew
would they stay
to face the threat
of ice and snow

or would they fly
to warmer climes
as humans do
to soothe our souls

we'll never know
what choice they'd make
since in their lives
no thoughts arise

and so we watch
as they endure
without complaint
in winter's dusk
